South Carolina's Harbour Town Lighthouse was built
on Hilton Head Island in 1970 by Sea Pines Plantation. The 90-foot red and
white striped beacon serves the Calibogue Sound. Built as more of an aid to
commercialization than an aid to navigation, the lighthouse was the first be
privately financed since 1817.
